Introduction
The purpose of this WebQuest
is to introduce you to the concept of matter. Matter is everywhere and
is everything. You are made of matter. The computer that you are
using for this activity is made of matter. The food you eat, the liquid
you drink and the air you breathe are all made of matter.
Essential Questions
What are the three states of matter?
What are the characteristics that distinguishes a state of matter from another state?
What is the difference between a physical and chemical change?
What does it take to move from one state to the next?
Task
Work independently to answer the questions on the
related worksheet. Use as many vocabulary words as possible to demonstrate
your understanding of the concept.
Process
On your own, create a flip chart illustrating the
states of matter : definition; molecular movement; position on the graph

Worksheet
Click on Chem
4 Kids and answer the following questions.
What is matter?
Give examples of physical properties of matter.
Give examples of chemical properties of matter.
Click on the following website and read
the page. After reading the States
Of Matter answer the questions.
Name the four states
of matter and give an example of each.
Describe the difference between a physical and a chemical change.
In the left margin of the webpage you
are currently on there are links. Click on the “Solids”
link and answer the following question.
List the major characteristics
of solids.
Now click on the “Liquid”
link in the left margin and answer the following question.
List the major
characteristics of liquids.
Click on the “Gases”
link in the left margin and answer the following question.
How does a gas respond
when put into a container?
Click on the following website and read
the page. After reading the phase
change answer the questions.
What is required to make a phase change?
Click on the word graph
Draw the graph.
Explain how energy is used on the graph.
If a substance is vaporizing- is it gaining energy or losing energy?
If a substance is condensing - is it gaining energy or losing energy?
Now it is time to see the three
states of matter in action. Read
and copy the facts that appear. Do the same for liquid and gas.
Click on the website
and click on the bubble that says solid.
Now click on the “Liquid” link
in the left margin and answer the following question.
List
the major characteristics of liquids.
Now click on the “Gas" link in
the left margin and answer the following question.
List
the major characteristics of gas

Evaluation
The States of Matter flipchart will be graded as
a summative assignment. Make sure you follow the rubric to ensure
a good evaluation.
