The Graduated Cylinder

Read the following directions for using and reading a graduated cylinder.  Perform the activity. Then answer the questions.

Measuring directly (measuring the volume of liquids)
                    a.  Fill a cylinder approximately 20 milliliters of water
                    b.  Place the cylinder on the table (flat surface)
                    c.  Look at the cylinder for the side.  The top of the liquid should be slightly above eye level
                    d.  Look toward the middle of the cylinder - at the meniscus.

Verify the volume of the water?  _____________ (read the volume amount at the meniscus)

         Measuring indirectly (irregular objects)
                    a.  First, measure the volume level of the cylinder (use the amount of water from previous lab)

What is the volume of the water?  _____________

                    b. Add two marbles
tip the graduated cylinder so that the marbles slide down the side of the graduated cylinder

                    c. Second, measure the combination of water and object

What is the volume of the water with the two marbles?  _____________

                    d.  Finally, subtract the volume of the water from the combined volume to find the volume of your object

What is the volume of the object?  _____________

How much liquid should be added to each of these graduated cylinders to reach the volumes indicated?
