Density

A relationship between mass and volume of an object
Mass – the amount of stuff (matter) in the object
Volume – the amount of space the object takes up

  • What observation can you make about the volume.
  • The number of red spheres represent the amount of matter
  • Which cube has the most matter?
  • Which cube is denser than the other?

The amount of mass in a specific amount of space
D = mass
volume

Measuring Mass for Density

  • Use the triple beam balance
  • Use the unit g - grams
  •

    Measuring the volume for density

    liquid or irregular shaped object

    Use a graduated cylinder

    Measuring Volume for Density

    • For a regular shaped object
    • Use 3 linear measurements
    • Length X width X height
