Chapter 1 Section 3 Measurement

    A Standard Measurement System (pp17-26)
Using SI as the standard system of measurement allows scientists to compare data and communicate with each other about their results.

        Length (Dimension)
units -  basic unit in SI is the meter (m)

centimeter (cm)  1/100 of a meter
millimeter (mm)  1/1000 of a meter
                            kilometer    (km)  1000 meters

            measuring length
                            common tool  - metric ruler

        Weight and Mass
Weight - the affect of gravity on an object (it's mass)
unit - SI is the Newton (N)

Mass - a measure of the amount of matter an object contains
unit - SI is the kilogram (kg)

        Volume
the amount of space an object takes up
unit - SI is the cubic meter

                    Volume of Liquid
meniscus - reading at the bottom of the curve for water

                    Volume of Rectangular Solids
                            measures length, width and height

                            V= l X w X h

                    Volume of Irregular Solids
                            use of displacement
how much water is displaced when the object in place inside the graduated cylinder

        Density
            relationship betwee mass and volume
            mass per unit volume
            = mass / volume
unit - SI is kilogram per cubic meter  kg/m3

        Time
            Units of time
units - SI  is seconds (s)
