8. Main conflict in the book: Hope and her Aunt were always on the move. Rejected by her mother when born, Hope grew up with her chef Aunt. One great gene Hope did acquire from her mother was waitressing. When hope and her Aunt moved to Mulhoney, Wisconsin, to work at the Welcome Stairways, Hope did not know what to expect. The owner of the restaurant had suffered from leukemia a couple years ago. She liked the cook, Braverman, but her mom had warned her not to from experience. She was confused about everything.
9. Setting of the book: (place and time) Hope was Here took pace in Mulhoney, Wisconsin, a small, set back town with a giant soul.
10. Main Characters and part they play in the book:
(1) Hope, a sixteen year old girl who has been waitressing her whole life. She changed her name from Tulip to Hope at the age of thirteen. She was given up by her mother at birth to her aunt, the great cook, Addie.
11. Are the characters believable and interesting? The characters are very believable. It is a realistic story that is unique and interesting by the author.
12. One excellent direct quotation from the book: (include who said it, page number, and use
quotation marks!) “It was 6:30 A.M., the best time to see a diner because, as Addie said, if the place isn’t humming by then, the word hasn’t gotten out yet.” Hope said to herself (pg. 24.)
13. Good reasons to read the book: It is a spectacular read because it tells a story about a teenage girl waitress, which is very realistic. It also shows an uncommon story, which is very fascinating.
14. Any reasons not to read the book? If you don’t like stories with girls as main characters then you might not want to read it, but other than that it is wonderful story.
15. Did you like this book or not? And why…. I liked Hope was Here because it was a realistic but unique at the same time. This story inspired me as to how a girl with such a difficult life managed to work her way through it and have a great time. It also helped me remember to keep on trying no matter how tough life can be.
